COVER LETTER
Hello!
My name is Moneesha Gill and I am interested in a position at Betsey Johnson. I am an Advertising major at SJSU and I am currently working part time at Banana Republic. My goal is to pursue a career in the Fashion Industry and eventually create my own clothing line. Since Betsey Johnson has been a major inspiration and contributor to my interest and passion for fashion, I would be honored at the chance of being considered as an employee.
This fall, I have taken my first step into the Fashion world. I have enrolled in fashion courses at West Valley College, which I hope will broaden my outlook on designing and fashion in general. In the future, I hope to work for a designer to learn all the ins and outs of the industry and be involved in merchandising and consulting for the company. Once I have gained a sufficient amount of experience, I plan to design my own line of products ranging from clothing to handbags to cosmetics.
Aside from the products, I especially enjoy the Betsey Johnson stores because of the exciting environment. Not only are the employees friendly and helpful, but they also portray a similar style to that of the establishment. I feel that I could contribute to the free spirited, whimsical atmosphere and help to maintain the fashion forward tone of the store.
Thank you for your time and I hope you will consider me for this position!
Moneesha Gill

Cover letter: Address it to a specific person, if possible. You don't need to start out by saying "Hi, my name is ...." They can see your name on your letterhead and/or at your signature. So just get to the point and say what job you're applying for and why you're interested.
ReplyDeleteBut the main problem I see with your cover letter is that it doesn't respond to the job requirements listed in the ad, including "be competent in retail math and have strong Microsoft Excel and computer skills" and "monitor store performance."
Resume: Your objective doesn't address the job you're applying for.
I'd put "Skills" section higher up. It mentions Excel, so it's fairly relevant. I'd either put it after "Relevant Coursework" or after "Experience."
Tighten up your bullet items.
I think I'd cut some of the volunteer and extracurricular activities. Just list the ones that are most relevant to this job/industry.
