Research Project

In the past year, our countries economy has suffered the worst recession it has seen since the Great Depression. With numerous lay-offs and vanishing benefits, American’s are at a loss for what they could possibly do to keep from having to relocate or take out a loan or even file bankruptcy. Now that we have a new president, we are expecting quite a turn-around to help our citizens receive greater salaries and much less get a job to begin with. Gasoline prices and health care are soaring through the roof, while people who have been lucky enough to maintain their jobs, are being paid less and less. President Obama has constructed a specific economic stimulus package to revitalize the rut that our market has become.

The main purpose of these drastic changes is to alleviate the pressures that have been put on middle and working class families and to eradicate the overwhelming burdens that the economy has left on us all. However, the economy is getting worse with each day and we are all waiting patiently for it to look up very soon. Since an over-night miracle is not possible, Obama plans to aid those most in need and citizens who are most likely to use the funds given to them. This way spending activity will increase and the economy will eventually stabilize. One of the first actions on the president’s agenda is to grant each and every worker an immediate $250tax cut which will cost $35 billion to supply the entire country with.

Because the importance of taxing workers to gain revenue for social security is still intact, Obama deliberated a reasonable and sufficient amount of $250 in aid that he could provide to employees. The goal of providing tax cuts to American’s is so that they can regain their spending power little by little and, in return, the economy will strengthen its consumer buying activity. But if we were to receive extra money, would we really spend it instead of saving it to pay off important bills and other expenses? Obama has already thought of this as well; he also wants to create a range of financial services available to American’s, to help relieve the burden of unwanted debt, foreclosure, refinancing home mortgages, and offering free credit reports. This leads us to the question of: how will senior citizens be helped?

President Obama intends to grant every senior citizen a temporary bonus of $250 in additional to their social security checks. For this, he is putting aside $10 billion in reserve. Unlike the tax cuts that will be put in place for workers, this specific aide will remain temporary until the economy has started to recover its losses. According to research, senior citizens in America are more likely to spend their extra funds because usually they are not financially responsible for any dependants and they already have their monthly social security check taking care of other expenses. Obama has decided that giving money to a market that is more likely to purchase is the smart thing to do.

Whether or not these elements will do our economy any good anytime soon is not certain. But the package does possess an optimistic and motivating air to what the president has in mind to keep us from truly experiencing a great depression.

Blog Post #4

When I asked others what they thought of hazing on college campuses, some of them didn’t think it still existed and many more didn’t know exactly what it meant. Hazing is the initiation of sorority and fraternity pledges; these initiations can involve anything from forced alcohol consumption to degradation of an individual’s self-worth. ABC’s John Quinones recently gathered a group of actors and set up a public scene of hazing on the streets of Long Island in order to exploit the unnoticed act. Because too many people ignore the topic or simply do not know the extent of it, he thought it was crucial to openly show the community just some of the things that are forcibly done to students. The test was conducted to see if people passing by would stop or even glance to see what was going on. A lot of people seemed to look in the other direction and continue to pretend like nothing was wrong, while others stopped to give the pledge masters a piece of their minds. There was also a major difference in how the women and men pledges were treated. When it came time for the girls to stage their show, there was a lot more verbal abuse that greatly relates to what women go through in reality. When pedestrians saw this, they weren’t as interested in helping; they basically just stopped to watch the show. Observing the reaction of random passersby, Quinones accomplished the goal in which the experiment was intended; awareness and caution. Not only did it raise responses from local citizens, but by airing it on primetime to the rest of the country, it educated all of us on the dangers we should avoid and the concern we should voice for these pledges. By merely walking by the commotion, we are expressing our ignorance and carelessness regarding this dangerous situation. Clearly some people do feel as if it is not their place to intervene, however our freedom of speech allows us to object to things we do not agree with especially when done in the public eye.

Journal #6 - Fish Out of Water

In all cultures, there is the traditional way of welcoming a child into adulthood with a celebration for the life-changing event. In the Hispanic culture, when a girl turns 15 she becomes a woman and her family throws her a Quinceanera. A quinceanera is a religious ceremony in which the girl’s loved ones commemorate her coming of age and all of the family and social responsibilities that come with it. It is also a joyous event for friends and family to get together, eat ethnic food, and dance the night away.

I recently had the pleasure of attending a quinceanera for my aunt’s niece who wished to honor her Mexican heritage and elders by having a traditional ceremony, followed by a more modernized party with her friends afterwards. Since we are considered family now, we attended the ceremony which took place on a Sunday morning at their local family church. The girl walked up to the altar dressed in a beautiful blush silk satin gown with a magnificently beaded bodice and a bouquet of roses in her hands. All of her close family was dressed in complimenting colors and held flowers and other gifts. The rituals were said in Spanish so I did not understand what sort of prayers were being performed, however I was intrigued by the grand importance of a simple age that has become so significant to this culture. I did not feel at all out of place, as the family has always been very welcoming; however I felt bad not knowing exactly what was being said because I could not follow along.

After the ceremony, everyone went back to the family’s home for an intimate reception held in their backyard. This is where the girl’s personality showed through; the patio was decorated with her favorite colors and possessed a classic theme of sophisticated womanhood. The party was casual and started off with a hip-hop dance performed by her cousins and friends. It was interesting to see how the ceremony, first comprised of religious prayers, transformed from traditional to modern with the latest mix of music and dance. As the night went on, we ate and socialized with the family and newly pronounced woman.

The rest of the night consisted of close relatives proceeding to give speeches to honor her and her special day as well as eating in abundance and then dancing it off. As the evening came to a close, I realized that having not been a part of this particular ethnic group, I still felt a close bond to the festivities and had an open-mind to learning about their religious and contemporary customs.

Journal #5 - Drinking Coffee Elsewhere

ZZ Packer’s unique writing style immediately captured my attention with its witty and edgy sense of liveliness. As I began reading the chapter on Brownies from her book titled “Drinking Coffee Elsewhere”, I instantly felt as if each sentence was full of detail and a true, honest feeling for every word written. The first paragraph alone was full of imaginative specifics which made me feel like I could picture the scene she described so effectively. Her use of metaphors took me by surprise because they were original and unexpected. My personal favorite was one that read, “…with their long, shampoo-commercial hair, straight as spaghetti from the box.” Packer’s writing style is fearless of using bold wording and takes a risk of readers either turning away from her book or being completely captivated. Her anecdotes are packed with alluring description that absorbs the reader’s interest. The dialogue has an uncommon place in the middle of narrative paragraphs; however it works well because it is relevant and understandable. Packer’s use of similes was creative and painted a clear picture of what she was comparing the first object to. Even though you would expect Brownie troupes to consist of innocent little girls “looking all around them like tourists determined to be dazzled”, as Packer phrases it, this chapter portrayed the girls as clever and not as naïve as we would like to think.

STD Stories

HARD NEWS STORY

TRACKING AND TREATING THE TRANSMISSION

San Jose State University’s health service director, Ellen Jones, is creating a program to inform students of STD’s because of the high number of cases diagnosed, and the health office is offering free STD testing from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Monday through Friday.

On campus, 50 cases of students with STD’s have been reported and Jones wants to help prevent this. She wants students to know the risks and dangers that come with intercourse. The college plans to provide lectures held in dorms by health service personnel, encourage professors to show an educational movie in classes, and distribute informative pamphlets discussing various symptoms to a wide range of diseases.

“It seems much easier to have sex with people than to talk about having sex. There are some students on this campus who didn't even know the name of their sexual partners." Ellen states in response to the doubled number of cases estimated for the end of the school year.

In the past four years, there has been less than half the amount of cases that there are now. The health service office is now offering free STD testing which will help students maintain their health.

PRESS RELEASE

PREPARING STUDENTS TO TRACK AND TREAT SEXUAL TRANSMISSION
SJSU Worries That Students Are Not Well Educated On The Facts And Risks Of STD’s

Now-a-days health officials are wondering whether college should also include a class on sex education. The growing number of students being diagnosed with STD’s has been cause for the college to take greater actions to provide what they hope will be an educational and beneficial program. Health service director, Ellen Jones, says that the school is doing everything in its power to create a way of communicating to students regarding the various types of diseases and proactive ways of preventing and treating them.

"It seems much easier to have sex with people than to talk about having sex,” Jones said. “There are some students on this campus who didn't even know the name of their sexual partners."

During the last four years, the rate of STD diagnoses has more than doubled and is expected to triple by the end of the school year. The college will offer lectures given by health service personnel, informative movies shown in classes, and pamphlets containing significant information.

To ensure the safety of all students, the health office will provide free and confidential STD testing 5-days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

I remember the days of my childhood when I would read the comics in our daily newspaper. As I got older, my family cancelled our subscription to the paper and I realized that I could easily find the same comics on the newspapers website. But it wasn’t until recently that newspapers around the country have been forced to crumble because of its more advanced media competitors. The internet and television have more than exceeded the capabilities of the newspaper, and in return, we are seeing much less of what used to be the most popular media source. So, what do other media sources have that the newspaper cannot offer? For starters, the internet and television provide a speedy update on news. Breaking news that can be reported to the world in a matter of minutes, takes newspapers at least a day to report. Also, if you can receive news for free, why pay for it every month? Another factor that’s bringing newspapers down is the fact that they don’t give the reader as much information as television or an internet article would. For these reasons, most people no longer subscribe to newsprint and this is resulting in a slow but steady dwindle in the newspaper industry.

Lillian Garland never thought that having a baby would mean fighting to keep her job. She was an employee at California Federal Savings & Loans where, after becoming pregnant, she was granted a leave of absence.

Of the 55 million women working in the U.S., we can assume that the chances of a female employee taking pregnancy leave are generally typical, so under federal law, this must be ensured. However, in Garland’s case, the California law was disregarded and she was denied employment at her previous position.

Having been assured of employment upon her return, she was confused to learn that her job had been filled while she was away on leave. In response to the false stipulations that she expected, Lillian reacted by suing California Federal for not abiding by the law and giving her her rightful four months paid disability. Five years after the case began, the U.S. Supreme Court decided to sustain the state law.

I’m not sure how the rest of the country feels, but personally I feel as if in the past, the only time we ever heard from our President was during his campaigns and the election itself. But this time, it is quite different; we have learned more about President Obama, his wife, and daughters in his first 100 days, than we ever heard about George Bush during his 8 years in office. Every aspect of the Obama family has been followed by the media and strong supporters since the day the President was elected. This includes entertaining news as well as the work that the President decides to do to change our economy. I think it is interesting and very lucky for us that in a time like this, our President wants us to know about his family’s daily lifestyle. It has given him a more personable image and in return, allows the citizens of America to be confident and reassured in his views and actions. Some news sites have included timelines of his progress as well as comments that Americans have voiced regarding his work so far. From what I read, it is 50/50; a lot of people feel that we couldn’t’ have asked for a better President, however a lot of people are disappointed in the things he has done and have already begun giving up on the future of our country. The way I see it: we have roughly 3 ½ more years with our new President and the only thing we can do is hope for gradual change.

America is a country that grants citizens the freedom of speech; but did Miss California take it a little over the edge when she openly voiced her opinion regarding same-sex marriage? Judge, Perez Hilton, asked the Miss USA hopeful a question about if other states should or should not take the direction in which gay marriage would be legalized. Miss California offered an answer that was highly offensive to some and irrelevant in terms of the question asked. She responded with her true and honest opinion that marriage should be between a man and woman; however she did not answer the question of if American states should legalize it. She made the wrong choice of incorporating her personal view on the subject and neglected to remain neutral so she did not offend the viewers or even the judges. Most people are glad that we were able to learn about her real feelings and are also glad that she will not be representing a country that has grown and evolved with the changing times and has become more accepting of different lifestyles. After the competition, she had been asked if she regretted her answer and she simply said that the question was given to her as a blessing in disguise and was meant for her to speak her mind freely.

The mad cow disease, anthrax, SARS, bird flu and now the Swine flu (aka H1N1) all possess one collective trait: they have each been introduced to us in the form of a deathly hazard that could affect the entire world. Most recently, the Swine flu has been discovered as a pandemic influenza that has not shown immunity to any certain individual. This flu has hit thousands of people all over the world in a few short weeks and many citizens are doing whatever it takes to keep their families safe. However, some may think that the media is simply overhyping the whole situation to instill fear and, in reality, the concern isn’t that much of a threat to us at all. On the other hand, many people feel that it is the media’s job to inform us of possible dangers and that we should take necessary precautions in order to protect our health. So why blame the media for overstressing the serious nature of this virus? Yes, I agree that spending a half hour regarding the Swine flu on prime-time television is a bit amplified, but don’t we want to know what deadly germs could be infesting our work place, schools, and homes? When a topic like this is exaggerated to a high degree, we feel that this is the only thing that we need to be aware of and that could possibly harm us. We forget that there are hundreds of other flu’s and viruses that could potentially take the life of any individual, young or old, healthy or sick. For example, the winter influenza has infected thousands and thousands of people and many have been killed by it, but we don’t see news on this pandemic in the media. Because the Swine flu is something newly discovered, the media has been trying to inform the world of its risks and the possibilities of it hitting close to home. To me, all they are doing is letting us know what’s out there; they are doing their job to broadcast important information to people living in all countries that could be targeted. It makes me wonder, that if they had not been reporting on the subject, would we be complaining about the lack of information provided as well? Again, I agree that the common flu has taken numerous lives and most of us know to take precaution, however the Swine flu is also just as dangerous and we should be lucky to have warning of its health risks.

Journal #7

I chose two Loreal advertisements from an edition of Glamour magazine which I thought had many similarities as well as some differences. The first is an ad for Loreal’s new Color Riche: a serum infused, nurturing and protective lip color. The ad is targeting working class women of an age where lip gloss and shimmer is too youthful, which could possibly be from mid 30’s and above. This product is shown as a luxurious buy, worn for special events; so I would say that these women may or may not be married but probably attend many social gatherings where a protective lip color is a must. However, the ad is features in a younger age group, so I would say it is targeting women of all ages who enjoy the look of lipstick. The ad also tells us that there are 72 different shades provided, so women of all skin tones and colors may use the product. In the second ad by Loreal, the product is called Vive Pro Glossy Style which is a mousse for curly hair. Instantly, we can tell that this ad is targeted to any woman with curly hair. Because the brand is Loreal, we can assume that it is catering to a woman with a steady income since the products are usually on the more expensive side.

In both advertisements by Loreal, there is a lot going on in. There are graphics and sentences that may turn people away from taking the time to read it all. However, the graphics are on the large size which attracts people to it and the wording and lettering is alluring enough to hold the reader. Both ads feature Penelope Cruz as their spokesperson and both ads include a quote from her commenting on how well the product works. When people read that a celebrity is using a drugstore brand like Loreal, it will encourage them to try it as well. Loreal is targeting their audience with ads that are saturated with color and layouts that work well in magazines.

Similes and Metaphors

Beneath the feet that help me trudge through the hot sand, is a three day old burial ground honoring the king of the sea. As I walk along the heat-infested beach, I seize the calming peace that has prevailed as a result of the recent death of a whale that has surfaced. Its lifeless shell rests upon the sand as if it has fallen asleep while sun-bathing. In a way, it feels like the beach has appeased its roaring waves to pay its respects to something that once lived within its protection.

My Obituary

Survived by her fabulous family, friends, and fashion followers, Moneesha Muneet Kaur Gill moved on from her whimsical world at the extraordinary age of 104 ½ years. Where she is now, shall remain a mystery; however, one thing is for certain: her essence will linger in the heart of our wardrobes forever.

She was a quirky, easily-amused individual, full of exuberance and passion for every phase of her lengthy life. Her ambitiously driven personality landed her the role of playing a number of assorted characters throughout her life. Being the youngest of three children so close in age, she looked up to her sister and brother and considered them her best friends. Her father was a man of Punjabi descent and her mother: a beautiful mix of Italian and German ancestry. In her eyes, these two individuals held the world’s secrets in two fists behind their backs, offering a life full of endless paths and choices.

Since the days of her youth, Moneesha was always a family-oriented individual who dreamed of a future full-size household of her own. She married her gentleman suitor of 5 years and they spent the first chapter of their lives together traveling and experiencing the world’s cultures. During the next decade they were joined by 3 daughters and 2 sons, all of whom had multiple children and grandchildren. Her wish for a colossal family tree was finally fulfilled.

After accomplishing her college goals, she practiced her advertising degree in the form of Senior Visual Merchandiser for Betsey Johnson boutiques all over the country. After a couple years of experience, Moneesha was ready for graduate school: The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in San Francisco, of course. But fashion was not the only thing that dazzled her senses; the thought of beauty, cosmetics, and making people feel good about themselves really drove her to becoming a certified cosmetologist. She was a successful business woman with her own line of color-intense cosmetics and down-to-earth, wearable runway fashion.

Although she never accepted retirement into her lifestyle, she slowly
revolutionized her prosperous and thriving business into a full-fledged charitable trust. The organization contributed to poverty-stricken individuals in countries all over the world. She held fund-raising fashion shows and auctioned off her latest designs to provide food, clothing, and shelter for struggling families of unfortunate events.

Moneesha was always a spunky woman saturated with compassion and love. Her fantastic life was lived to its fullest and she was ecstatic to have so many people take part in it. Thoughts of our dearest Moneesha will remain with us eternally and we shall all live in her lasting words: “Be the author of your own book.”

Journal #3 - NPR Interview Analysis

Terry Gross, the host of Fresh Air, recently went inside the mind of singer, songwriter, and poet, Leonard Cohen to discuss his first country-wide tour in 15-years. Prior to the interview itself, Terry briefly introduced Cohen by naming some of the songs he is famous for, and then playing a song for listeners to enjoy. After the song was finished, she immediately went into asking about certain lyrics of the song and his inspiration for writing it. Terry then proceeded to asking about the difference between the lyrics of his poems and songs and their cynical nature. She would pose questions regarding actual items in the song such as the famous blue rain coat, as well as the validity of the lyrics relevant to his life. Aside from the musical and poetry, Terry wanted to know more about a different part of Leonard’s life: the Zen Center. This is where Cohen spent a small part of his life on a spirituality retreat in significance to Buddhist practices. She spent the final portion of the interview discussing Leonard’s thoughts on beauty and its importance to him. Leonard responded with a negative view on beauty, saying that he felt greatly oppressed by the figures of beauty in his past and present.

Before Terry began with her interview, it was obvious that she had done a hefty size of research on Cohen which resulted in well-put questions and informed follow-up questions in response to his answers. She would listen to the each song, choose a line that caught her interest, and would formulate a question about the inner-workings of his songwriting. It almost seemed as if she was telling Cohen about his own life and, in return, I think the interviewee realized the time and effort that she had put into her interview with him. Therefore, Terry received a more in-depth, personable angle on Leonard Cohen. Terry handled Leonard’s short responses with ease, as she casually attempted to expand on his words and generate his thoughts.

The thing I liked most about this interview was that both individuals seemed as if they were having an ordinary conversation. They did not show the pressures of a formal discussion that was aired on public radio. I learned the importance of researching the topic thoroughly and preparing extra questions and subjects to discuss. Interviewers need to be quick on their feet and be able to handle possible lulls. I feel that Terry did an excellent job in doing just that.

Query Letter

Dear Editor,

In today’s feeble economy, wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could all continue to follow stylish new trends and be fashionable, while sticking to a budget?

Designers are persistently conceiving and creating chic fads despite the unfortunate lack of sales. Gradually, consumers have been cutting back on their apparel purchases, and as a result, all clothing companies are suffering.

But there is a way your readers can be hip and trendy while going easy on their wallets. May I introduce to you an article on how to build a fabulous wardrobe around any individual’s specific spending habits.

I intend to search for the perfect combination of incredibly low prices and superb garment quality. Feel free to contact me at any time to discuss a possible piece on "The Fashionable Guide to Fabulous Finds."

Sincerely,
Moneesha Gill

IMHO #1 - Mexican Drug Cartels

When I think of drugs, I think of its illegality and covertness; not thousands of murders in all of the Americas. Ever since the president of Mexico declared war on its drug lords two years ago, there have been mass murders as acts of revenge on the government. According to a 60 minutes segment by Anderson Cooper, the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security states that the stakes are high for both Mexicans and Americans. Not only are the drug cartels taking Mexico by force, but they are also fighting to gain control over land by the U.S. border which is only miles from San Diego. Suspicious of rival drug dealers in the states, the Mexican cartels have intruded across the border invading homes and demanding payments of debt. The New York Times reports that there have been brutal assaults and kidnappings in Phoenix and speculate the shootings in Vancouver may be linked to the drug cartels.

Thinking of all the heinous incidents that have occurred in recent months, I can’t help but wonder how these people somehow believe it is their right to kill hundreds of innocent citizens because of their own involvement in illegal drug trafficking. The drug industry has been a source of income in South America and I understand that in these times people need money more than ever. However, those who get involved in something so shady should learn to expect its drawbacks and losses, and it should in no way result in invasions and killings. In Mexico alone, over 7,000 government related individuals have been murdered because of their connection to the president. Taking the life of someone based on who they know or what they do in their profession is a tremendous offense that should be put to a stop immediately.

From what I have read on CNN’s website, the war was initiated by the government to end the drug cartel’s trafficking business. But if you think about it, would it have been better to allow this to continue behind closed doors instead of pronounce war and reveal the cartels therefore concluding in mass murders? After learning about the bloodshed and grotesque torture that Mexicans and Americans have endured, I feel that it might have been a better idea if the Mexican president had looked the other way. In today’s society, it has become common for a vast majority of our population to get involved in illegal drug dealing. This has gone on for years with the rest of us pretending that it does not exist. Sometimes ignorance is the safest policy.

Beer Truck (REVISED)

A refrigerator truck carrying Coors Beer caught fire on the Bay Bridge around 1 p.m. yesterday causing several hours of traffic for commuters.

Officer Shawn Chase reported that the truck’s tire blew out and since the driver did not notice this, he continued to drive. The fire was ignited by metal rim scraping against the pavement resulting in flames on the eastbound lanes. The Bay Bridge was shut down on both the eastbound and westbound lanes while the fire fighters worked to put out the fire. Drivers in the eastbound lanes were stranded in their cars for 45 minutes waiting to see what the traffic was about.

Chase informed us that the driver was not injured, nor were any of the other drivers. However, the accident caused many other backed up highways in the Bay Area and it wasn’t until 2 p.m. that fire fighters were able to put out the fire completely, reopening all of the westbound and some eastbound lanes. The rest of the afternoon was spent clearing the road of the burnt truck which took almost four hours to complete.

Finding Features in the News

Keeping the Flame Alive: Do fairytale romances always have happy endings?

How could you give it a local angle?
I would definitely relate this story to Valentine’s Day and people who just don't want to be alone on that day. It would also be relatable to divorce which has become so ordinary in this day and age. Can love be mistaken for infatuation? If so, can a relationship survive on infatuation alone?

Who could you interview locally for this story?
Interviewing people of all age groups would give me the widest angle on the story. It would give readers a range of similarities and differences between couples in various stages of relationships. Surveys could be given out at local colleges as well as in the workplace. Even taking a random sample of people on the street would give more variety within a local city.

As I try to maintain the daily hustle and bustle of the Banana Republic fitting rooms, anxious customers with clothes filled arms begin to form a line at the entrance. Many of them look through the massive stack of go-backs while others stare at me shooting hurried glances eager to get a room. Annoyance fills the vicinity as women impatiently check the hands on their watch; some of them tempted to abandon their garments with me and leave before getting caught up in the madness.

The first room becomes available and I lead a woman to the door offering my assistance if needed. Seconds pass and the woman sticks her head out of the room asking my opinion on a deep eggplant blouse she has decided to try. She wonders if it looks too tight and requests a larger size. I use my walkie talkie to call for a size-run as the line of eager women continues to grow. As soon as I receive the blouse in a larger size, I see the woman now in front of the full length mirror in the middle of the rooms. I walk closer and hear another woman compliment her on the beautiful top and her slim figure. The woman notices the enormous piece of fabric in my hand and with a smile, she declines my offering.

Beer Truck Exercise

According to the CHP, a refrigerator truck carrying Coors Beer caught fire on the Bay Bridge around 1 o’clock in the afternoon yesterday. Officer Shawn Chase reported that the truck’s tire blew out and since the driver did not notice this, he continued to drive. The fire was ignited by metal rim scraping against the pavement resulting in flames on the eastbound lanes.

Chase said “The driver was not injured, nor were any of the other drivers.” However, the Bay Bridge was shut down on both the Eastbound and Westbound lanes while the fire fighters worked to put out the fire. Drivers in the eastbound lanes were stranded in their cars for 45 minutes waiting to see what the traffic was about. The accident also caused many other backed up highways in the Bay Area.

By 2 o’clock, fire fighters were able to put out the fire completely, reopening all of the westbound and some eastbound lanes. The rest of the afternoon was spent clearing the road of the burnt truck which took almost four hours to complete.

Journal #2 - Media Audiences

The story of the infamous mother of 14 children has recently sky-rocketed to becoming the most talked about news story in America. Whether this issue is ethical, legal, or even possible, is what people are discussing all across the country. This story has been covered multiple times using every source of media that is popularly viewed amongst the majority of our population. I would say the web has seen all angles of this news piece because it is readily available and easily accessible. The web also serves as a public forum for personal opinions but can lead to the chance of false information and accusations. Using the internet to broadcast stories is quite different from newsprint and television in a way that is more detailed and immediate. Even if the thousands of related news stories are a couple paragraphs or a couple pages in length, there is still more information available on the web than any other source. I think web based media is more similar to televised news because of its ability to obtain new updates and information in a speedy manner. Newsprint articles are only comparable to web stories because they both require us to actually read the news. I think using the newspaper to broadcast news that is rapidly changing is not as efficient as the web or even television. This piece of news has been the cover page of the newspaper for days; however its information is already old by the time we are able to read it. The newsprint articles are accompanied by photos and charts of each baby’s progress along with figures estimating the salary that this mother would have to receive in order to support all 14 children. This type of media is not sufficient because of its inability to report on every new update and modification. If we compare the televised news to either of these media sources, it will probably rest in between the web and newsprint because it is almost as available as the web but it is something that you have to sit down and watch at a specific time.

Journal #1

“When a beautiful woman walks into a room, I may glance up for a moment, but I soon return to my entrée or my conversation or the dessert menu. Let’s be honest: beauty is not all that interesting (and certainly not more interesting than the dessert menu). But when a confident woman walks into a room, it is entrancing. I’ll watch as she moves with poise and self-possession. She is not usually the one in the plain black dress. She is the one in the interesting shirt and the vintage skirt, and I immediately want to know where she got them. And she may not be the most stunningly gorgeous woman I’ve ever seen, but she has a way about her that can make her one of the most intriguing. Confidence is captivating, it is powerful, and it does not fade – and that is endlessly more interesting than beauty.”

Nina Garcia
The Little Black Book of Style
Pg. 3
2007

* I especially enjoy this passage of the book because it emphasizes the importance of self-esteem and confidence in a strong woman. Its focal point is not on fashion itself, but on vital factors of life such as: respecting and loving yourself. In doing this, you will be on your way to achieving the kind of confidence that is apparent to others around you. I am also fond of how the author uses analogies and examples to make it more relatable to the average woman. The moral of this passage is to be your own muse: dress for yourself and always wear your confidence on your sleeve.

About me!

“Fashion can be bought. Style one must possess.”

This quote to me is a way of life. Though it is literally referring to fashion, in my eyes it also represents the way you portray yourself in a way that is unique and brilliantly out of the ordinary. My legal name is Moneesha but strangely all my life I have gone by my alias: Muneet. For whatever reason that my parents decided to name me after the Indian goddess of intelligence, will remain unknown, but the latter has no other meaning than that of 22 years of existence. I am the youngest of three remarkably close siblings who are each comprised of half Italian and German genes from our mother and half Indian characteristics from our father. At SJSU, I am working towards graduating this winter with a degree in Advertising and later pursuing a career which will unite my education with my love for fashion. My ultimate goal is to become a designer of high but down-to-earth fashion that will be recognized as classic with an air of funk. In the meantime I aspire to be part of a fashion magazine or becoming a visual advertiser for any of my favorite designers like Betsey Johnson. I also enjoy sewing, dancing, cooking and hanging out with my favorite people! From this class, I hope to broaden my fascination of journalism and learn how to work my new blog!
